Causes of Child Labor

It happens to be one of the biggest issues in the world, but hardly receives the rightful concern and attention it deserves. It is a true and utter puzzle as to why nothing substantial has been done about it. It is totally and utterly unethical! These people are not machines!

They feel pain, they have feelings, they have families to support and they require food and shelter. The increase in cheap labour over the years is largely due to big corporations becoming multinational businesses to gain economies of scale.

One main reason businesses choose to set up in undeveloped countries or choose to outsource to them is to purposely take advantage of their cheap labour.

They get away with this cycle because these people need jobs and have no other choice; but we should give them that choice. Minimum wage must be implemented into more countries in order to prevent businesses taking advantage of hard workers in undeveloped, cheap labour countries.

It is sickening that paying unjustified and unfair amounts is considered acceptable in this day and age. All humans have rights; and therefore we should be treated equally, and as humans. Cheap labour usually involves child workers, which is a completely unacceptable and appalling practice. Children are slaving away from a young age, when they should be playing, getting an education and experiencing childhood.

Around the globe businesses are committing this unlawful act and we are allowing it. To most people cheap labour is like a leaf falling from a tree; it has no effect on us, so why should it matter?

Why should we react? What can we do about it? Child labor is mainly contributed by poverty. Most parents send their children to work so that they can bring the much needed income. The practice is common in poor countries. Children are forced to work in sweatshops, factories, fields; mines match factories, and households. On the other hand, children may work as tourist guides and some are sexually abused by tourist. Such cases are common in places like Kelala and Goa. In the current world, more than million children work, most of them in full-time basis.

Majority of these children do not attend school, and are given little time to play. Moreover, they do not get proper parental care or nutrition. Child labour has been defined as any work done by the children in order to economically benefits their family or themselves directly or indirectly, at the cost of their physical, mental or social development.

Child is the loveliest creation of nature. But it is the circumstances which force them to hard labour. They have to earn livelihood from early childhood, stopping their mental development. The nation suffers a net loss of their capacity as mature adults. Child labour is a global problem. It is more common in underdeveloped countries.

Child labour, by and large, is a problem of poor and destitute families, where parents cannot afford education of their children. They have to depend on the earning of their children. The prevalence of child labour is a blot on society. It is a national disgrace that millions of children in this country have to spend a major part of their daily routine in hazardous works.

The problem of child labour in India is the result of traditional attitudes, urbanisation, industrialisation, migration, lack of education, etc. However, extreme poverty is the main cause of child labour.

The participation rate in rural urban areas is 6. According to a recent report, 17 million children in our country are engaged in earning their livelihood. It is about one-third of the total child labourers of the world. In India, working children are engaged in different organised and unorganised sectors, both rural and urban areas.
